Spinning Thing...?

My new idea is to do a spinning thing, possibly like a yoyo, which creates noise as you spin it. Something unexpected as to create a sesation of surprise and delight as you suddenly realise that the toy is even more exciting than you thought at first.

How to make the sounds...???

Combining The Two...

So I've put the two variable things together and it has come out pretty amazingly. There's a pretty good scope of variation available in this code, I'll deffo be able to get my 5 sequences out of it. Next I plan to invert the colours and make it thicker.

Here's a link to the code, have a play...

Second Code

Once again, this really isn't very hard to program at all... This time I've programmed it so that the outer edges move in and out as the cursor moves up and down.

REVOLUTIONARY!!!!

Illusions

Bleurgh

Yeah... That whole blindspot idea hasn't really panned out... I can't for the life of me figure out how to incorporate that cool little trick into an actual 3D interactive model!! Thinking I'll just find another idea, unless someone here can suggest a way of doing it?

First Code

Here the first code I've made to modify an aspect of my shape. Basically I made it that the inner corners move in their assigned directions as the cursor moves left and right.

Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be...

Blind Spot...?

Had a thought today, along the same line as that whole illusion thing. I found this whole thing about blindspots whilst doing last minute research before my tutorial :P
Here's a good quick video to demonstrate it.

Shape Ideas

Just me sketching some things for my shape idea. Pretty sure I'm going to go for the octagonal/cross shape, as you may be able to tell.

Fun And Functional

So today we brought in objects again... This time the idea was to bring in interactive things, something fun and something functional (didn't see that coming did you...?)

So for the functional item, I brought in a Swiss army knife. Obvious reasons... Doesn't get much more functional than all of those useful tools stuffed into the one piece.

And for the fun item I brought along a plasma lamp! These things are amazing displays of complicated science used to create an object which is completely and utterly useless... But it's just so much fun to interact with it, you can get sucked in for ages. Experimenting with different ways of touching it (don't try metal...)

Fun With Coding.... LOL JK!

First Try At Processing...

Sensual Objects

So today we had to bring in five objects, 1 for each sense...

For sight I brought in the drawing I did for my first DSDN111 project. I really like the way the intersecting lines create an illusion of movement, it seems as if there are spinning circles when you move your head.

For taste and touch I brought along some chocolate/mint flavoured lip scrub from Lush. First off this stuff tastes amazing (I basically only bought it to eat it... DON'T JUDGE ME!) But the reason I chose this over the other tasty treats I have is because of the fact that it's not actually intended solely to be eaten. There's an element of surprise in finding that a cosmetic product actually tastes really good!! The feeling of it is a really bizarre, wet, gritty feeling. Obviously fit for the purpose of scrubbing lips... (awkward moment when my tutor asked me how it would feel on other parts of the body and I told him that it would feel good all over...)

For smell I brought along some handwash for its burning, alcoholy feeling in the nostrils. Not very pleasant... I wasn't the only one who thought of bringing in horrible chemical smells though. One guy had ethanol paint or something, damn him for outdoing me!

And for hearing I brought along an app on my phone which creates a range of tones which are harder to actually hear for older people as they get higher pitched. Once again, that same guy stole my idea... Con...

Shape Modificationing

This lecture we did a wee little exercise, exploring how to edit aspects of a shape. We were told to start with a base shape (top left) and then move it, stretch it, rotate it, resize it and change the stroke weight. This is just how I ended up doing it, not sure if I'll use a shape like this for my final base shape or not.

Trying To Instruct People

Today we were given our first exercise to introduce us to the concept of coding. We had to choose an object and then write out instructions so that someone else could draw the object without knowing what it was. I chose a red stabillo pen (breaking out the creativity!) and wrote out (what I thought were) pretty easy instructions to follow... You can see one persons result in the picture, that one wasn't TOO far off, give them credit. The other person drew it weirdly off scale, TBH though I'm pretty sure they had no concept of how long 15cm is...

Moral of the lesson, be painfully detailed.

Processing Applications

So yesterday we were asked to analyze two applications on openprocessing.com. Here's what I chose...

http://openprocessing.org/sketch/48672

I like this first one because of the simple but effective interactive design. It's a beautiful fluid look, but this fluidity is actually made up of multiple straight lines, making for an interesting design aesthetic. I feel this app could be improved by the addition of a choice of colours... But that is just me being picky.

I really love this second app. I've been procrastinating from writing this blog by playing with it... The idea actually relates to our current project in that it allows you to create multiple forms from the one basic shape. My favourite part is scrolling the mouse wheel to make the branches thicker, this makes the branches a lot more interesting to interact with.
