Thrifters Manifesto Draft

Thrifters Manifesto

There is no wrong way to participate in design culture - There are designers and there are consumers, there are observers and there are leaders. Do as you feel comfortable doing.

Individual style is better than mass produced sameness - Thrifters should prize vintage quality over bulk, big-box store products. A thrifter should understand the feeling of potentially owning the only remaining version of a product in the world, The thrill of uniqueness is a main component of the thrifting ideal.

Thrifters must be more observant - The thrill is in the hunt, and a thrifter must posses or quickly develop and ability to search through a collection quickly yet thoughtfully.

Thrifters aspire to self-invent and self-express in a more conscious way - That shirt might be the right kind of big, you can definitely turn that into a plant pot, that object might work in an unexpected way, don’t worry if people don’t like it when it makes you happy.

Thrifters need a grasp of creativity - You will often need to be able to envision one object as another, be able to conceive a product with a different and unexpected potential. Consider areas where thrifting is less abundant, expand yourselves.

Thrifters should be environmentally aware -  We have a responsibility to consume wisely and to respect our resources so that we and others after us can continue to participate in a design culture. Thrifting and repurposing is a good way to achieve this.
